Library presents author of cookbook

Friends of the Ridgeland Library will present Katy Houston, author of the cookbook “Sweetness Follows: The Story of a Young Man’s Journey from Near Death to a Beautiful Life,” at noon Wednesdayat the Ridgeland Library.

For 62 weeks, Houston presented Sam Lane, her son’s best friend, with a treat of the week after he sustained life-threatening injuries when hit by a drunk driver as he was riding his bike. Houston told Lane she intended to feed him back to health, and the recipes in the book are the ones she prepared for him. Houston will share her cookbook and inspirational story. Chateau Ridgeland plans fundraiser

Chateau Ridgeland independent senior living community, 745 S. Pear Orchard Road in Ridgeland, will host a breakfast fundraiser to benefit Outward Bound for Veterans from 8:30-10 a.m. Saturday.

Chateau Ridgeland will serve pancakes and waffles for a suggested donation of $5 per plate, dine in or take out. Please call ahead. The breakfast will also feature homemade blackberry brandy syrup.

Outward Bound for Veterans is a nonprofit organization that helps returning servicemen and women transition from combat to civilian life. To R.S.V.P., or to learn more, call (601) 956-1331.

Comedians slated for Alamo Theater

Center of Attention Entertainment presents “LaffGasm: The Memorial Day Edition,” 8 p.m. Saturday at The Alamo Theater, 333 N. Farish St., Jackson, featuring comedians Marcus Combs and Carmen Barton and hosted by Jackson’s own Marion Kendrick.

Roles available for production

“Les Misérables” will come to life in a musical production on stage at Mississippi College this fall.

Mississippi College students, children in metro Jackson and others in the community seeking roles in the production are invited to audition June 1 at the Jean Pittman Williams Recital Hall. Auditions on the Clinton campus in the Aven Fine Arts Building will begin at 9:30 a.m. There will be a large ensemble featured in the production set for Oct. 11-13 and 18-21.

Kool & the Gang to perform at stadium

Nissan will host a 10th anniversary event Saturday at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium in Jackson featuring Grammy-winning R&B band Kool & the Gang. There will also be circus performers, a children’s area with various activities and fireworks.

Gates will open at 4 p.m., food (for purchase) and entertainment continue until 9 p.m., with Kool & the Gang performing at 7 p.m.

There is no admission charge for the event or for any of the activities. Nissan will provide complimentary tea, water and lemonade. Security provided. Coolers, alcohol and outside food or beverages are not allowed.
